Customer Discrimination - We Do It All the Time
A Financial Times editor in London asked my opinion about systems that automatically route customers to higher or lower levels of service based on the loyalty and profitability of the customer. This happens every day with gold and platinum customers enjoying faster telephone service and shorter lines while everyone else waits and waits.‘Isn’t this a case of customer discrimination?’ he asked, hoping for a hot topic and response. My answer was decidedly cool: ‘Of course this is customer discrimination. And it is totally appropriate. After all, customers do this with companies all the time.’The editor was confused until I explained further.Customers are constantly choosing which companies to patronize, how frequently and wit

An important issue to keep in mind during supply chain design is visibility to actual demand from end customer. Stable demand from end consumers may become lumpy and unpredictable to second and third level suppliers due to bulk ordering practice of distributor and retailer. Supply chain planning becomes difficult when the demand is unpredictable. Trust based coll

Supply chain management is a powerful management tool to win over competition. Well designed supply chain for different products will look different. Supply chain for supplying pasta will be different from supply chain for selling fashion jewelry or rushing airline spare parts. Supply chain for producing and delivering pasta will be designed for productivity and efficiency. Supply chain for airline spare parts or offshore drilling equipment will give utmost importance to timely delivery and availability at any cost. Nature of the product, customer expectation, production method and parts used are some of the factors to be considered when designing a fitting supply chain. Demand and supply side uncertainty are the key determining factor when designing a supply chain for a product. Well designed supply chain that suits a product or category is a competitive advantage.

Product nature can be broadly classified as either functional or aesthetic. Functional products like pasta have stable demand whereas demand for aesthetic products like fashion goods is erratic. Innovative aesthetic products enjoy high profit margins but at the same time have seasonal demand and short product life cycle. It is difficult to stock enough of each items from broader product portfolio but a stock out of a popular item can tarnish brand reputation. On the other hand functional products like pasta or bread have predictable demand. Product nature determines demand uncertainty which in turn determines the nature of the supply chain. While product nature lends demand uncertainty, supply side uncertainty can emanate from multiple factors. Uncertainty at the production stage can originate form unpredictable yield or change in production technology or change in process. Uncertain lead time, small supply base and weather are also some of the non-production factors that contribute to supply side uncertainty.

When the supply side and demand side variations are low, operational efficiency is the key to successful supply chain. Production intensive industries can improve operational efficiency by optimizing the production process and eliminating non value adding activities. An important issue to keep in mind during supply chain design is visibility to actual demand from end customer. Nonprofit Fundraising
Though the programs and missions are the most important priority for nonprofit organizations, fundraising comes in a close second. Every nonprofit manager knows this fact, and though there are constantly new fundraising methods, you should never forget the foundational fundraising techniques that provide the structure for all other efforts. It is important to understand where the majority of funds come from for nonprofits. Individual donors are the number one source of funding for nonprofits. In 2005, individual gifts amounted to almost two hundred billion dollars. This is a stifling number. Be sure to focus on individual giving before moving on to explore other options. Corporations are the second largest contributor to nonprofit fundraising.

Franchisor Website Rules and Media Regulations
Recently a Federal Trade Commission Report on Franchising has been looking into what should be allowed on Franchisor websites, as some information could be considered advertising for franchise buyers. Most websites of businesses in the franchising industry are set up to sell and give information to consumers of the end product; Submarine Sandwiches, haircuts, hotel rooms and things of this nature. This has been one of my major complaints in franchising. States like CA dictate what we can say on our website if we wish to sell franchises there. We have 13,000 pages online on all of our websites, the Department of Corporations in CA had once asked us to submit our website to them, so they could look at it since they wish to regulate advertising. Hello, May I Help You?
There is nothing in this world more annoying than being place on hold for an extended period of time. Not only is the music mostly horrible, but many companies use it to try and fool you into thinking you're really not holding for very long. Wrong! Most telephones today have the ability to track the time of the call. Really, now, don't you think being placed on hold for five minutes while listening to the Muzak version of "Copa Cabana" is a bit much? When a live person finally answers your call, they may know very little about who you want to talk with, whether or not that person actually works there and, oh yes, "Can you hold while I catch the other line?"Business owners who are in the know have trained their staff to understand that the

    Being a Real Estate Pro
Buying a place to live in is not just merely purchasing a house. It's one big step in building a home. Making a wise decision in buying a house is not only spending your money the right way, it is more of building a strong pillar of a family and stable life.To many, they assess the value of a particular investment in terms of its market value or prevailing market price. Others consider practicality, while some are way too willing to spend on whatever seems investment-worthy. There's really no hard and fast rule on how to make the perfect investment. We can only come as close as making the wisest and most practical decisions balancing risks and profitability. Sadly, a lot lack the aptitude in making investment decisions that can best work for them
uction intensive industries can improve operational efficiency by optimizing the production process and eliminating non value adding activities. Trust based collaboration between the supplier and buyer for sharing real demand information is the solution for avoiding demand lumping in the supply chain. Stable and even demand facilitates better demand forecast, effective planning, optimum levels of safety stock, better customer service levels, less waste and improved profit margins. Logistics is core to operation of distribution intensive firms. Firms in distribution intensive industries like retail and 3PL must focus on improving logistic efficiency. Careful review of transportation, storage and distribution network and practice will through some light into non value adding logistic tasks. Redesign of end to end supply chain can improve logistic efficiency. WalMart, a pioneer in retail supply chain, ships stable demand products directly to the store from its supplier thereby eliminating expenses due to intermediate handling, inventory management and transportation.

When the supply side uncertainty is high, risk pooling input materials can help Inventory can be piled up for low value input materials. Usually there is a risk associated with creative or high-value parts. Inventory can be pooled, shared and managed along with other users if the inputs items are scarce high value items which are difficult to obtain in bulk. Maintaining substitute materials and alternative suppliers is a time tested tactic used to manage supply side risk. Practise of allowing substitute parts or materials earlier during the design time is also a supply side risk management strategy famously called as "Design for Supply Chain". Firms in the down stream of supply chain use more custom parts to differentiate their products from their competitors. Special attention is required to maintain uninterrupted supply of such custom made parts critical to product differentiation. Various supplier relationship strategies such as controlling stake, partnership, future contracts and other supply hedges to secure steady supply of critical parts.
