Learning to go with the flow and not force issues in our lives can be a major challenge. The older I get, the more I realize this is something we should pay a lot more attention to…because it is true in many ways.

I’m really going to show my age with this statement, but back in the sixties, a favorite saying was, “Just go with the flow man.” Today we’d say, “dude” at the end of that sentence, but the meaning is still the same.

When you are desirous of a certain outcome to a project, situation or relationship the path will be much easier if you go with the flow of your personal energy rather that push up stream to achieve the ultimate outcome. In other words, if it doesn’t feel right, it probably isn’t.

One of the hardest traits I stressed over for many years in sales was the one of learning/knowing when to shut up and wait. Be quiet; let your prospect think. If you’ve done your job correctly, they have all of the knowledge to base a decision on, so sit back and go with the flow.

This applies to most everything in life. If the driver in front of you can’t go any faster than the car in front of him, it does you no good to tailgate and push them. If the line at the grocery store isn’t moving as fast as you’d like, don’t appear impatient and be a grouch to the checker when you get there.

If your spouse is going through some hard times physically, emotionally, or career wise, don’t impose your point of view unless asked for, go with the flow or the energy of the relationship, and let them ask for help if they want it.

Accepting where you are in life, and being okay with it will eliminate stress, allow you to think more clearly and often allow your mind to slow sufficiently to conjure up new approaches to a problem, situation or relationship. But, if you try to push it the way you think it should go, you may end up with an outcome you didn’t expect or want and success will elude you.

Going with the flow of your life also improves your happiness. If you aren’t all stressed out over something and just go along, you smile more, you’ll get along with others better and life in general is easier.
