The amazing thing is he did none of the above. He simply went to his Lord and said, the taxes are due and I don’t have the money.

The next thing really takes some faith. What the Lord told him was the most unusual way of making money I have ever heard. This truly was a big fish story. He said, go down to the river and there will be a fish there, and he’s got the tax money in his mouth. Peter is at decision time. Does he think a, the Lord has lost it this time, b, he can’t really want me to do something so ridiculous, or c, the fish has the money. Most usually the answer would have been a, but were talking about a man who walked on water. He believed that the impossible could very well be possible. It must have looked pretty ridiculous as Peter approached shore line looking for the fish with the money. I am sure people were asking why he kept picking up fish and tossing them back into the water, and I am sure that he did not answer them. He was a miracle hunter and did not have time for anyone to cause him to doubt the validity of the Lord’s word.

I believe that one particular fish had his eye on Peter. This fish probably had a stomach ache all day. Could he possibly have been praying to God about getting someone to take the money out? Since we are looking at an incredible situation, perhaps it did. If the Bible says that a donkey talked, it would not surprise me that a fish could pray. This was a win, win situation.

I can imagine that Peter saw that look, gently picked him up, took the money out of his mouth and tossed him back into the water. Both of them probably said, “Whew!” Diving into the incredible with God has its moments, but the rewards are far beyond our wildest expectations. Peter would never have imaged that over 2000 years later people would still be talking about his big fish story. Perhaps the Lord is trying to develop one in your life. Trust me, the results will last forever.
