Best Laid Plans - Unexpected Events - and the Choices we Have
Kevin was ready to get the day started. He only had one scheduled meeting all day, a real rarity. He was looking forward to a day in the office to catch up on calls, emails, filing, etc. As he walked out the door of his home he slipped on some ice and broke his ankle. Kevin’s day just landed in a totally different direction than what he originally intended.Julie woke up all set to get the week started. She was excited because she was ready to dig in and be a productivity maven. She had put a task list together and she was geared up to tackle it. Just as she knocked one item off the list and felt that she was just getting on a roll she was interrupted. The interruption itself isn’t really important to this story – whether it was a colleague “dropping by”, a client calling, or her son’s school – the fact remains, her roll was brought to a screeching halt.Does this sound even vaguely familiar to you? Many of us start out our days or our weeks very well intentioned, excited even, to be productive or make a dent in the “to-do” list. Occasionally, something unexpected happens. The unexpected event prevents us from being as productive as we would like to be. When this happens

Translation of Internal Reports & Communications
In today's global economy, it is not only trade that is international. It’s the companies and their employees too. Therefore it’s increasingly common to have companies with a variety of languages spoken in the divisions. So perhaps we should expect that translation of internal reports and communications is a regular occurrence?I have worked at some pretty large international companies and from my own experience most businesses have not adapted to the language needs of the company. In fact most have not localized and translated their mission statement. What seems to happen is either: 1) the company informally states that there is a single core language of the company and therefore the translation of internal reports and communications is not required. 2) An internal effort is made to ‘translate’ information on an as requested basis.Let us consider these in turn: Single Language Company – Trying to pretend that you have a single language company when you don’t, is a ‘head in the sand’ approach. This can lead to some of the following issues: 1) Alienation of staff and divisions. 2) Staff turnover – In addition to (1) the career track of an employee will be linked to
News reports this week contained good and bad news for certain people in the technology, business, economy, trade, and entertainment industries or sectors around the world.

First, the technology industry is reported to be booming.

A proof of the flourishing technology industry is the 3GSM World Congress held in Barcelona and participated by three biggest cellular phone technology firms in the world - Nokia, Sony Ericsson, and Motorola. These companies presented their latest products in the fair, most of them using the latest 3G technology. Motorola released ROKR. Nokia revealed plans to release Nokia 6136. Sony-Ericsson disclosed the release of the K610 phone and music player. Moreover, Sony Ericsson and Nokia will have a joint venture in developing cellular phone technology-mobile television.

However, some consumers do not avail of this latest technology because they want to avail of discounts and bargains because of offered to last year's technology. But this won't be the case this year as inventories are kept lean because of the new ability of retailers and manufacturers to share sales and inventory information with each other. Yet, they can still get the best price if the consumer to determined to put some effort and acquire knowledge about the technology.

Another event that took place is the twentieth edition of the Olympic Winter Games last weekend in Turin, Italy, which brought in a host of businesses. Companies collaborated with the local government of Turin under the supervision of the International Olympic committee. They hope to have an international publicity by advertising its product in the uniform of athletes participating the sports event, flooding television airtime with their commercials, and plastering the venue with advertisements.

This week, companies have made announcements of either joint ventures, downsizing or takeovers.

Volkswagen announced over the weekend that there will be 20,000 jobs will be cut from 2006 to 2008. They said they want to improve their market standing as they face fierce competition and declining markets. Even though the job cuts dismayed Volkswagen employees, investors were pleased with that decision as the companies shares rose to almost a 3-year high. The company also projects to enjoy a 61 percent increase in profit.

Don't Get Caught In The Efficiency Trap
Okay, I'm going to start off by talking bad about a Toyota dealer, so before we get into it, let's make a couple of things clear. I own a Toyota Prius and love it! From what I have seen, I would probably enjoy owning almost any Toyota vehicle. However, not all Toyota dealers are created equal, and I have run into one low-life, scumbag, bait and switch dealer in North Dallas, but that has been the exception rather than the rule. The other Toyota dealers I have dealt with have all been courteous, service oriented, up to date technologically, and efficient. Therein lies the rub, as Bill Shakespeare would say. Sometimes even these great organizations get so caught up in their grand scheme of operations that they lose sight of how to do the simple things.Years ago, some coworkers and I used to have a motto of sorts. It was something like; "Work tends to expand to occupy the time and resources committed to it." That seems to be what has happened to such things as "labor saving devices", paperless record keeping and the like. This was brought to mind today when I took my Prius in for an oil change. After it was completed and I got my paperwork, prepared by a computer, by the wa

    Fire Your Analyst (Part I)
A recent scientific study (Craigie M, Loader B, Burrows R, Muncer S. Reliability of Health Information on the Internet: An Examination of Experts' Ratings. Journal of Medical Internet Research. 2002 Jan-Mar;4(1):e2) measured how consistent are experts when analyzing qualitative data. The data included the text from 18 threads (series of connected messages) posted on a message board by individuals suffering from a chronic disease. Each thread consisted of a start message, or question, and a number of responses, or answers. The experts processing the data were five doctors who worked together in the same specialist unit, and who had at least five years experience in treating the chosen disease. To process the data, the doctors devised the following two scales. The start message or question was coded according to a 6-part scale: A = excellent; B = less good but with some details; C = poor with little detail; D = vague; E = misleading or irrelevant; F = incomprehensible. The responses or answers were coded according to another 6-part scale: A = evidence based, excellent; B = accepted wisdom; C = personal opinion; D = misleading, irrelevant; E = false; F = possibly dangerous. After processing the

Learning a Simple Lesson from an Alzheimer's Patient
My mother has Alzheimer’s. She’s been in a nursing facility since February of 2005, and she’s more or less bed ridden. One of the many negative effects of Alzheimer’s is rapid memory loss to the point family members’ names are forgotten and some members get forgotten altogether. Another symptom is life regression—that is where the person mentally and emotionally backtracks from their current age back to birth. The average person afflicted with Alzheimer’s has a life expectancy of roughly seven years from the time of initial diagnosis. Luckily, our family still has some time to share with mom, but the inevitable is always looming. It’s truly a gut-wrenching experience for both the patient and loved ones. If I were to guess as to where my mom is in her regression, I’d estimate her to be somewhere in the neighborhood of her early twenties to late teens. She’s 78 years old so you can imagine the transgression and what it means.Early in my mother’s career she worked for the telephone company as a switchboard operator. Today, as we know, phone calls are connected electronically with no human intervention required. In my mom’s mind, she “works” at the nursing facility, b

With 30,000 Internet censors commissioned by the government, China aims to deter its citizens from gaining access to websites that feature or discuss issues that are sensitive to Chinese policy. Although it baffled industry insiders, Google's compliance was in line with their aim to capture the lucrative Chinese market, home to more than a hundred million Internet users.

Weather also affected businesses this week.
