Smears from fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) of the right breast lump showed clusters of malignant epithelial cells indicating ductal carcinoma. On 14 April 2005, Chan proceeded to have a mastectomy together with the removal of 25 lymph nodes. Vascular and lymphatic invasions were noted.
