Two weeks into her new business, she signed her first contract with her first client. To get that client, she called the four organizations with whom she had volunteered. This is a great example of how involvement in your community can result in business. As a speaker, I set aside one or two days a month for donated speeches to community groups. Once, I gave a speech to a high school class of at- risk teenagers. In the room was a school volunteer from a major corporation.Soon, I had a contract to speak at her company.Part of strategic marketing is using non-traditional marketing vehicles, and finding ways to build your sphere of influence without having to send out a mailing or pass out your brochures. Community involvement is a valuable marketing opportunity that is often overlooked. While you are giving back to the community, you also feed your soul, participate in a great opportunity for personal growth, have a lot of fun, and meet people it can be good for your bottom line as well. People like to do business with companies that care about their communities. Habitat for Humanity, The Red Cross, The Salvation Army all want you.To be strategic about the time you spend volunteering, identify what you think your clients care about or ask yourself if there is a niche market you would like to be more involved with that cou Don't Jump From One Internet Marketing Strategy to the Next Whenever singer John Mayer sings his romantic song, "Your Body is a Wonderland", I can't help but think of web sites and usability. As a usability consultant, I see the devotion to his lover, and the time he spent uncovering every detail of her being, as the way most web site designers think we approach their web sites. When the lyrics arrive at "Take all your big plans; And break 'em; This is bound to be a while", I start giggling. It makes me think of Amazon.com. I'll explain why. When marketing on the Internet, especially in the early stages, it is very tempting to jump on the next get rich quick scheme that comes along. Running an online business is a lot of work so we all are tempted to try and take shortcuts to get things moving on the fast track and reduce the workload.I can tell you from personal experience that this is a bad idea and will take you away from doing what needs to be done with your online business. I can’t tell you how much money I’ve spent on these get rich quick schemes that yielded me a lighter wallet and cost me valuable time. Money you can get back, but the time that you waste will be lost forever. Life is short enough. Don’t waste your time because of marketers trying to make a quick buck off of the sweat of honest people who are trying to make a better life for themselves.Stay the course. Don’t get derailed by strategies that may, or may not work. You will become very confused if you don’t stay focused on what you need to accomplish with your Internet business because you are trying different things that don’t work. Jumping around will cloud the way that you think to the point that you will lose the ability to distinguish from what really works and what doesn’t.So stick with what you’ve been doing. If you have been doing it for any period of time chances are that you are on the right track. Forget the get rich quick schemes and keep moving forward toward your main goal. Get your Internet marketing business off the ground before considering any other offers that may come your way.The best thing to do is not to even read these get rich quick offers in the first place. This ad doesn’t tell me what I should do to get it to go away. When I click it, I’m instantly taken inside the web site to a targeted area. There’s my Gold Box, and my Wish List, and 15,459 links to things I might want to buy. All this is displayed in the first few seconds of my arrival. Whenever a web site presents me with an onslaught of too much, too soon, I often feel overwhelmed, or angry, and leave the site. If Amazon was a human being with an actual body, I probably wouldn’t like him or her for very long. I would find the physical Amazon pushy, invasive, greedy, egotistical, and likely a hypochondriac. If you don’t include career planning as the fundamental stepping stone for your future, you will be doing yourself a disservice. Yes, your career can wait until you are out of college but planning can’t. Whether you are a new grad or a professional seeking to switch gears, now is the right time to consider your options.Starting EarlyNo matter how much professional experiences you acquire, developing a list of positive choices is always going to be difficult and no matter what. It is commonly accepted that proper planning must be perfected. This theory stems from the idea that thinking alot allows for refining and correcting before you put the plan into action. You How to Design Great Performance Measures w seconds of my arrival. Are you guilty of using the following methods as your approach to measure selection:* brainstorming with your team in a one-hour session during your two-day planning workshop?* trawling the internet or other places to find out what others like you measure?* asking your IT guy or gal what data you have and creating measures from that?* hoping someone will tell you (maybe a consultant or a stakeholder)? These aren't approaches to measure selection. They are just ways to gather ideas for what to measure. None of these methods include any kind of overt and deliberate evaluation of which measures are the best measures. And you're probably wondering why your organisation has so many meaningless measures! Plus, on the flip side, these methods may have left you high and dry without any viable options for measuring some of those less tangible results like culture or sustainability or engagement or confidence. If this is your burden - having no logical, practical way of choosing or designing the measures that can truly convince you that you're making the differences you need to in the world - then here are three tips that might make your life a little easier:1. measure the result, not the action2. what you can observe and describe, you can measure3. don't measure it just because it's easymeasure the result, not the action"Ensure that people with a disability do not experience discrimination and have their particular needs for services and support acknowledged and met." You Site Promotion Tools Directory Submission y thousands of ecommerce web sites, I turned to a different way of seeing and a different kind of art. The type of Cubist art that Pablo Picasso painted seemed to fit.Once you have finessed your website and have every page functional, optimized and attractive you may wish to think about another key implement in your arsenal of site promotion tools. The DirectoryYahoo and AOL are examples of directories. However the premise behind directories is that a human being researches the website that has been submitted and it is a human being who chooses or refuses a website for inclusion in the directory.Since your website will be reviewed by an individual it is imperative that you make sure your site is fully developed. If you submit too early it is possible your site will be rejected based on the number of incomplete pages.Imagine your child taking a page of homework to their teacher. When asked why the teacher returned it she replies, “I’m sorry, but you only answered two of the eight questions. I can’t accept this work.”Most students know better than to hand in poor or incomplete work, but in the world of cyberspace it is not uncommon to find incomplete sites being sent to directories in the hopes of placement. Maybe these website owners were unaware that their site would be personally reviewed. In A Perfect WorldIf you were to do everything correctly you would make sure the following elements were well developed before you submitted to any directory.1) Pages should load quickly. 2) Content should be optimized. 3) Site design should be attractive and functional.Once you are in the midst of a directory submission you should make sure you took care of the following.1) Be intentional about finding the category that best describes your site. A good friend of mine once said that if you think in pennies you get pennies and if you think in dollars you get dollars. The only way for your blog to be making $1000 daily or more is to promote affiliate products. Unlike Adsense, there aren’t any rules to affiliate promotion. You can post a link on your sites and ask your visitors to click it. You will never be able to do that with Adsense. As your blog traffic and popularity increases your affiliate income increases too. My method of making money with affiliate products on my blogs is to choose 3 high paying affiliate products and focus the blogs to promote only this 3 product. Some simple ways you can optimized your blog for affiliate income is to create a “Resource Page” where you can highlight all 3 products and give a short summary on each like a catalog style page. His chest literally opened back up and my friend held it together with his bare hands while family members got medical help. He saved his father’s life. Since then, his artwork took on a new form. From this artist’s point of view, everything is present, in the moment, all the time. We normally see it in bits and pieces, and then miss most of what’s around us. This struck a chord with me. Should a homepage, for example, present everything the web site offers all at once? Is there a way to do this by offering clever clues or gentle nudges that leave enough to the imagination to make the visitor want to stay on the page until it all comes “into focus”? This was one of the experiences that brought me to link Pablo Picasso and web design. Pablo Picasso felt that only by means of our awareness do things come into being. We’re normally unaware of something until it matters to us. Awareness, Experience and Persuasive Architecture Impressionist art is not about painting objects as they are seen, but more about the experience of seeing them. Andrew Chak writes in his book, Submit Now: Designing Persuasive Web Sites, “What our users see are the web pages in front of them at the very moment they are trying to do something. Each page either helps them move forward in the process or puts them a step back. If you have gaps in your functionality or you don’t provide guidance to your users, you can’t expect them to just figure it out.” One solution for guiding web site visitors to important pages or items is through the use of persuasion and making a site desirable. For example, when a product is designed, some thought is also given to the human response to it or the experience of using it. The same can be true for web sites. Amazon utilizes persuasive techniques. Remember that “movie screen” ad? When clicked on, it deliberately t
